Well, is it?

To me there is no question, but, not all photographs are art. So what is and what isn´t? It is up to you, and me of course. These are 2 articles from The Guardian about the subject. What would you be prepared to pay for that you couldn´t do yourself?

Salt of The Earth

This is the name of a film about photographer Sebastião Salgado. I saw it yesterday and I really like to recommend it to you all. No light movie entertainment but a moving story about his life and photography. Always traveling the world documenting areas where not many people like to go. Unless you absolutely have to. Like Doctors without borders. This is real life and it is shocking to see how terrible circumstances are for too many people in our world.

Sebastião Salgado is one of the most widely-respected of contemporary photojournalists. His in-depth bodies of work document the lives of people the world over, finding beauty, strength and hope even in those in the bleakest of circumstances.

These are some links that will take you to his images and more information about him.

If you get a chance, go see the movie and send a contribution to Doctors without borders. I will do that right now.

I understand that the movie will be presented after the summer.

The gun was loaded’: photographers on the shots that changed their lives

New York

This article is from The Guardian where you can find lots of interesting articles about photography.

“Some photos change the photographers life”. Not only the viewers.

ESB through binucular at WTC

These 3 images changed my life years later with 9/11, when WTC was a target for a terror attack. These 2 images above were taken from the observation deck at World Trade Center. The one closest through the binoculars there. All with a small 35 mm Minox GT.

Inspiration, transpiration

1BEarly in photography school my teacher got very upset over one of my friends that hadn´t done his homework. He said he didn´t have the inspiration. My teacher, Calldick Lundblad, said “how are you going to get food on the table and be paying the rent if you will always sit around waiting for inspiration”? Good question!

4AIn the blogging world there are so many people sharing ideas and inspiration to get a better life. I think that is marvellous. The world really has a chance to be a better place with all the improvement. But it all comes down to us. We have to have a will, inspiration and we have to work to get there, to do it. It all start with yourself. You are in the center of your own life and it is you who is in charge. Not so easy all the time, really. Don´t think I am not aware of that.

11BWhat my photography teacher told me, and I live by it still, is to get into it. To start. Along the way you will build the inspiration, together with the transpiration. For every step that is getting you closer to the goal it feels better and better. The inspiration builds up. It is hard work but rewarding. Perhaps you can inspire others. The best of it all.

5BYour beliefs can move mountains. War is over if you want.

The past thing with photography

I made these photographs some years ago, as you can see. Not knowing, or even dreaming, what was going to happen to the world. This is a series photographed with a small Minox 35mm camera, big as a cigarette box. Nothing special today, but back then it was. The series is all about Empire State Building. Seen from various positions in New York.

You can see that these projects, themes, that I am working on is not something new. Concentrating on a theme I try to see things from as many different views as I can.

Just as you press the button it becomes a thing of the past. Sometimes more than you can imagine.

I have not visited NY for many years. It would be great to go there again and to work on a new series.

This picture of Empire State Building is special. It was made leaning my camera against my shoe. Not knowing precisely what I was aiming at. This is one out of 5 exposures. People passing were looking at me wondering what I was doing.

Tools of the trade

ABC, easy as 1, 2, 3.

These tools were used by my father in law. Perhaps he was given them from his grandfather. My father in law was a great and kind man, Allan Pernebrink. In fact that great that me and my wife named our son after him. It felt natural. I made this series for the millennium calendar. That´s why MM, 2000. The tools are made as roman numbers from 1 to 12. Just like the months of the year. I take great happiness in taking care of his old tools and I use the frequently.I II III IV V VI VII VIIIIX - 2

FYI

Today I stopped and picked up the black glove that I have been seeing in Sveavägan for many days. I finally did it. It has been run over by thousands of cars during rain and shine. A woman walking her dog was looking very suspiciously at me. 😉 Other gloves are coming in from friends. I will let you know how it all develops.

No, the black glove is not included in this blog.

The start of something old

IMG_0027I have just started this project that I have been thinking of for a long time. Unique, no. But I will do it my way as usual. I have been looking, searching for gloves some time and I will continue to do that. To find the interesting gloves. The ones with a history. Again I am asking, looking for the history. Who used it, when and why?

IMG_0030

Gloves are used for painting, gardening, in the garage etc etc. I find them in the streets. Sometimes. Some I have used myself. But wherever they have been used they have a story to tell.

They, the gloves, are often made for a specific reason, use. To stand water, gas or just to keep your fingers clean.

IMG_0035Builders using concrete use gloves. Of course!

But(t)

A good friend of mine, Rebecka Dahlén,  was running a photo gallery. During the openings cigarette butts was filling the street outside, and she didn´t like it. I understand why. So, together with a friend she came up with this idea of Don Dobbin.

“a small, fireproof and non smelling disposable pouch for cigarette stubs that can be placed directly into a pocket or into the waste bin.”

I think the idea is great and I wish they could find money for the production. The product is universal and would make a big difference for our environment. Read more on her homepage about the product that really can make a difference. And, if you can come up with an idea to start the production, or to find funds for it, I will be happy to pass the idea, or contact, along.

The cigarette industry is crazy, just look at these packages that I have photographed.  Who came up with this brilliant idea to the “Peace”package?

I remember something funny I read a long time ago. “An ashtray is something a smoker use if the room doesn´t have a floor…”. Perhaps not so funny after all.

The featured image is one I made for an exhibition at the gallery raising attention to the butt problem.
