It is final

It came and it went. Like all other days. The final day at Täby Galopp in Stockholm. Sun, clouds and artificial lights gave different looks to the races, and the images. Together with two colleagues I produced an exhibition for the event. It was well received and I am very happy for that. It gave me a possibility to talk to the viewers. Some did not see the point in unfocused, blurred images at all. So I told them that I do. To me it is not that important to recognize jockeys, horses or owners. I am looking for speed, power and color. So also yesterday. Here is the result. A few more images to add to the series from Täby. Next race is another track, different light and angles. Exciting and a new challenge.

I accept that challenge!

It is getting colder and darker

It is getting colder and darker, yes. And up here in Sweden we are slowly going into winter. However, the brave jockeys are still working hard. Yesterdays race was in the evening. Although just at 6 it is dark outside. Very dark.

The racetrack where I go is close to Stockholm, and it is called Täby Galopp. Täby is the name of the place. But it is soon no more. The field will be turned into apartments and there will be a new racetrack with another address. The place has a lot of history and it is a bit sad, but the new track looks very promising with stables etc. I think that the jockeys and the horse owners will be pleased. But it is further away from the city. And for a photographer who likes patina, well. Not yet.

I have learned that horse racing is also a winter sport. I am looking forward to that challenge and I will dress warm. I hope to visit a stable during next week and see what they are up to with some new and promising horses. Stall Malmborg.

Yesterday was a challenge for photographers. The light at the trace comes in various colors and the darkness put the ISO at the top. Here is my selection.

Again and again and now again

I went to the track today again. I am having trouble staying away. I meet so many talented and nice photographers every time, and I learn so much that I never knew before. Or even thought about. It is exciting, never the same. But it is getting colder. For horses, jockeys and the audience. This morning it was 0 degrees and there were frost also in the city. Brrrr! I wonder how the jockeys keep warm during the races? Some were not even using gloves. I have heard that this is also a winter sport. Brrr, again! The jockeys are so short and small but oh SO strong. You see them more standing than sitting during a race, and often almost without rest they change clothes/colors and horse and they are off again. Supermen AND women!

If I remember right the next race is an evening race. Colder and darker, much darker. It will be all lights around the track. A real challange for photographers at maximum ISO. Today I have also recorded sound. Hope to use it with some images soon.

More horseracing, or dressed for success.

Perhaps these pictures should be called “dressed for success”? Some horses has to be “dressed” so they can keep concentrated on running and nothing else on the side. Some are not especially fond of going into the start box. I have missed some races lately but happily I could go to the track yesterday. Horse racing is a sport for betting and for that you need computers. When they fail there is interruption. That happened yesterday. The horses were waiting and so were jockeys and audience. During that period I managed to get some portraits of owners and horses. I get more and more interested in the contact between jockeys and horses. The jockeys riding on several horses during a day has to know all the different personalities and know how to get the best from them. It is getting darker and colder. Next time I will put my heavy boots on.© Per Erik Berglund_MG_6494 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6650 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6704 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6715 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6733 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6740 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6742 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6763 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6898 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_6928 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_7063 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_7114 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_7163 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_7300 © Per Erik Berglund_MG_7339When they are not running on grass it is called dirt track. You see why.    😊   Pelle

Another day at the horse races

I continue to see how I can develop my images from horse races. As often as I can I am at the track nearby. Some wednesdays there are lunch races and that suits me perfect. So today is wednesday and I was there. Not only, very seldom in fact, I stand at the finish line. Instead I try to find other angles and places. The first two are my personal favorites. Which one do you like best?

Look!

On my visits to the race track outside Stockholm, Täby, I have become friends with other photographers. That is always a great joy. One of them is Elina Björklund. I didn´t know much about her at first, but now I know more. And I have seen her pictures from the races. Not only those where the winner is crossing the finish line. That could be interesting but there is more to a race than that. And to the sport. Lots of details. When you have a picture, that is when the job goes into another phase. Saturation, cropping etc. Important! I think she is a master. I am always happy when I see good photography. This makes me really happy and I want you to see. This is a small selection and there is more on her homepage. This sport is very colorful so to go b/w is having courage. I like! To get good pictures you have to master the camera, and I think she does.

Dirty business

The sun was shining but these were no clean races. The most difficult horse to get into the start box did win. They are often a bit nervous, but well on the way they just go for it. This is fast. Very fast! And it is not a silent sport. Screaming, yelling, breathing. The hooves sounding against the ground with great power. No hard work, no win. And that goes for the team, horse and jockey.

Not much of a saddle by the way.                        It is supposed to be very light so it is also VERY small. They better hold on tight!_B_MG_4295😊  Pelle

Me and The Marx Brothers

Yesterday was “another day at the races” . At Täby Galopp. It is just as fun and it is not until afterwards that I see what I have managed to catch. I know what I am looking for, but that is about it. There is never any guarantee that I get it. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don´t. That is also the charm, the excitement of it. It is colorful and it is fast.

Very fast!

IMG_2563IMG_2177IMG_2216This is when there should be sound to the images.

The hooves against the track, jockeys shouting, and the horses heavy breathing.

It is called dirt track, no doubt.

IMG_2001IMG_2140

IMG_1864 kopiaThere are lots of beautiful details.

The jockeys and the horses are a team. But the horses are not any ordinary engine.

PP, power personality.

IMG_1733 IMG_1744 IMG_2019And the jockeys. The drivers to tame all that power and speed that the horses are capable of.

Like me, sometimes they win and sometimes they loose. The big small men.

IMG_2489 IMG_2095And sometimes the jockeys has to try some of the tricks in the book.

No time for the horses to take a look at the beautiful surroundings.

IMG_2085Very Swedish!

Horsepower

IMG_5749When I grew up horsepower came on wheels. Two or four, but very seldom on legs. We lived in the country but my father had a garage and motors were his big interest. Overshadowing most everything and life long. Most of my family have the same interest, but I kind of fell down another tree, or how the saying goes.

TestIMG_6148Horses are beautiful with a force and power that is tremendous. Perhaps there are similarities in racing horses or other horsepowers. You have to take care of the power, treat it well, to make it work for you. It is an amazing team work. Horses are personalities and they could, like us, have a bad day. Things I understand but don´t know so much about since I havn´t come close to them. Until now that is.

TestIMG_5846Yesterday was another great day at Täby Galopp, the racetrack in Stockholm.

TestIMG_6235 TestIMG_6076The way I have chosen to photograph horses is a great gamble. But it is nothing that I can bet on. Not until afterwards do I see if I managed to catch the moment. A moment that I often does not really know existed. But it appears very clear to me when I see all the exposures what I like. As most always with photography it takes just as much time in post as taking the photographs. To come up with a selection is time consuming. This is a small selection from yesterday.
