Stockholm dressed in ice and snow

Stockholm is built on many islands and water. This is what the boats and quays look like now. From todays short walk at Skeppsholmen. It is -7 C and the fingers are freezing.

I wish

This new year, 2016, what are we going to do with it? Are you among those who makes promises? Are you good at it? I don´t do promises for a new year any more. If I decide to do something I do it as quick as possible.          ( That doesn´t always mean immediately. 😉 ) No need to wait for a special year. That might just take too long to get it done. A man has got to do what a man has got to do… So, what do I wish for the new year? Same as you I guess. Without trying to win a Mr. World competition, peace on earth. Wouldn´t that be nice? Don´t ask what the world can do for you. Ask what you can do to/for the world. I think that if we all do the small things to us and our friends, and the people we meet, that will make a big difference. Small and big goes well together here.

OK, promise!?

A good day for me starts on my short walk to my studio. ( Breakfast reading today´s news is also fine ). If I meet a friend to say hello to, or If I can smile to a parent whose child is jumping in a puddle. That is a good omen for the new day.

Of course I will challenge myself with some now projects and images again this year. Can I arrange an exhibition with a selection from my horse racing images, or my working gloves? That would be great. And I am open to surprises. Things that I didn´t expect. This year will include an extra day at the end of February. Be sure to use it well!

The first blog of the year will include some images from the archipelago. And some new horse racing images from last Sunday. It is suddenly a white winter up here in the north.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Hi all bloggers and readers. I just received a message from WordPress that I have been blogging for a year. One year! That is a long time. A friend of mine suggested that I should start writing down my thoughts and I owe him many thanks. Thank you Martin Ö. I like blogging. Thinking and to reflect upon life and things.

So what happened? I have written about my own images and my all new interest in horse racing. Among other things. That I did not see coming. With this profession and interest it is easy to examine a new personal interest in images. I have been reading much more on the internet about photographers and their images. I did not expect that, but I like it and I like to recommend you to see and read about many of the talented photographers around. Old and young. Some well known, and others all new to me.

By the way, my personal favorites are Penn, Avedon, Watson, Mappelthorpe, Cartier-Bresson and Steichen. To name a few. All so called classics.

More personal: I am having difficulties in listening to guides at galleries or museums. The language they use and what they say sounds odd to me. If that could perhaps be the word. But OK, it is interesting listening to someone trying to explain a photographers/artists creative view and work. The explaining is also creative, but often it sounds like too much baloney to me.

I really love my profession, and I think you can see that.

Some statistics. I have managed to get  68 followers, made over 120 posts ( including this one ) and got over 500 likes. I like that! Some of you are giving me likes frequently and I am very happy for that. Thank you! I have had 4.950 views and the best ever was on November 13th 2015, 273. The internet is huge and the bloggers are many.

My first post was in Swedish, but after that I write in English. Good exercise and all my friends and colleagues in Sweden reads English. No problem.

What now? Do I have a  New Year promise? Not really, but I like to continue to challenge myself. With my blog, my thoughts and my photography.

Finally I like to share an image and new info with you. This image, photographed in New York in 1982 through the binoculars at observation deck, World Trade Center. It has been selected by Duncan Miller Gallery in Santa Monica, USA, to be included in their Your Daily Photograph. ( Photo made with a Minox 35GT, if you are interested. ) However not sold, yet…

Yes, I am happy! About that too.

I wish you all A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year! With blogging, taking pictures or whatever you like to do. Do it more!

In vacation mood

I went to Copenhagen for a few days and put my eyes in vacation mood. My eyes went up and down, and all around. That is usually how I do to see the surroundings. Mostly I looked down. Mostly, but not always. On the ground were large plates of thick iron for us pedestrians to walk on over ground work here and there. They all had, I guess, the owners initials. Very graphic. I like to do series. When my eyes find one, of whatever, they always find more of the same.

Täby Galopp 2015-11-18

The day I started blogging I had NO idea where it would take me. Now I know better and I am surprised. One thing I had no idea of was my interest in horse racing, or galopp in Swedish. It started this summer at Jägersro in Malmö. Now I take every opportunity to photograph. On the track or in a stable. It sharpens my sense and my eye for a new world. I discover details that I have lived most of my life not thinking about. It is good exercise for a photographer.

The competition is hard and everybody would like to win. However I experience there is a great friendship among the jockeys. Except for the finish of a race. Then the shouting and screaming is intense. The images should be accompanied by sound to get more into the racing atmosphere. I´ll see what I can do about that.

The weather is changing towards winter and yesterdays first races were held in fog. It is cold and damp. This selection of images includes more humor and smiles than usually. Enjoy!

Our share of dyslexia

This is something totally different from what I have written about here on my blog earlier.

Our son ( sun 😊 ) has dyslexia. A teacher noted that he had some problems reading and writing and he made tests for it. This was many years ago now. The tests confirmed that he had dyslexia. Good, the challenge was confirmed. He got all the different data programs the school had to help him, but he never liked to use them. He struggled on but he just wanted to be like the others that didn´t have dyslexia. It was possible for him to have more time for his examinations, and to go to a special room and sit together with others with the same challenge. That he used. As much as possible we try to help. Sometimes we read and record texts that he has to work on so he can listen instead of reading. I remember that he has never had any trouble making himself understood and he has always been the wordbook in his classes. Always good at words and their meanings. Good to express himself and to argue. I came to think of all this when I found this article by

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/oct/02/young-dyslexic-children-creative

My wife and I have never considered this a problem. We have always called it a challenge, and a challenge it is. But as it is so well written in the article there are ways to come around it and people with dyslexia always come up with solutions. Now our son studies in another country but there are ways to help through the internet. A friend of ours remembered that at the time their daughter studied abroad it did cost a fortune to make a phone call. Now it doesn´t and we are very happy about that.

He will not be a architect, but I am sure that he will find his way in life.

Writing this I had my own difficulties of finding the words, spelling right and pull it all together.

Grown up childhood

Not so strange that I like these photographs by Kim Leuenberger. After all I have photographed my own toys many times during the years. But never like this.

“I do it for the fun, mostly, because I love travelling, plunging into another world and playing creatively with my camera. I think the style of the cars I choose reminds us of a beautiful past and have a positive nostalgic feel to them.

“I’m not trying to make believe these cars are real, I’m just trying to make people smile, enjoy another type of voyage and open their mind to adventure.”

I agree, and promise to show my own images soon. This article was also found on BBC.com. There are more great photographs in the article. YES, photography is serious business, but also great fun.

Look!

On my visits to the race track outside Stockholm, Täby, I have become friends with other photographers. That is always a great joy. One of them is Elina Björklund. I didn´t know much about her at first, but now I know more. And I have seen her pictures from the races. Not only those where the winner is crossing the finish line. That could be interesting but there is more to a race than that. And to the sport. Lots of details. When you have a picture, that is when the job goes into another phase. Saturation, cropping etc. Important! I think she is a master. I am always happy when I see good photography. This makes me really happy and I want you to see. This is a small selection and there is more on her homepage. This sport is very colorful so to go b/w is having courage. I like! To get good pictures you have to master the camera, and I think she does.

Dirty business

The sun was shining but these were no clean races. The most difficult horse to get into the start box did win. They are often a bit nervous, but well on the way they just go for it. This is fast. Very fast! And it is not a silent sport. Screaming, yelling, breathing. The hooves sounding against the ground with great power. No hard work, no win. And that goes for the team, horse and jockey.

_B_MG_4248 IMG_4192_B_MG_3883 _B_MG_3923 IMG_3969_B_MG_3749 _MG_4195_MG_3977Since this is hard work there are many hard working women in the saddles. Not much of a saddle by the way.                        It is supposed to be very light so it is also VERY small. They better hold on tight!_B_MG_4295😊  Pelle
