The Art of Building 2016

The 15 finalists of this year’s Art of Building architectural photography competition have been selected from thousands of entries. Here ( BBC ) we present the photos along with a comment from each photographer.

I picked these up at BBC. I like the one with ladders especially. That is also an art of building a building. πŸ˜‰

About the above image: Jonathan Walland: “This is part of a series of photographs demonstrating how the absence of light can be used to divert the attention of the observer towards what the photographer intended to highlight.”

Michele Palazzo: “New York City’s iconic Flatiron building emerges from the blizzard, like the bow of a giant ship ploughing through the wind and the snow. Taken during the historic coastal storm, Jonas, on 23 January 2016, the photograph went viral during the aftermath of the storm.”

Enrique Gimenez-Velilla: “This photo seeks to pay homage to all the clever unknown workers that still build and maintain built infrastructure in the developing world.”

_92948185_12_the_gherkin_by_james_tarryJames Tarry: “This series is about looking past imperfections and ‘incorrect’ architectural photography techniques. The expired Kodak Ektachrome was developed in the ‘wrong’ chemicals to produce these big slabs of often other-worldly colour. These are flawed and hopefully challenging, just like some of the buildings themselves.”

Harry Benson Shooting Rock History

Being a music nerd myself I find these images wonderful. Some truly amazing images and stories to go with them.Β  Some images are composed while other let you hear the wings of music history. All the way from Sinatra to Beastie Boys. And now Dylan is coming to Stockholm, still going strong.

In a new documentary about his life and work, Harry Benson: Shoot First, his famous subjects-turned-admirers.

“what makes his photographs so memorable: they’re surprisingly candid and humanizing in a way that’s often lost in more controlled photography settings. “I hate studio pictures,” he told Rolling Stone earlier this week. “I like everything out of control. Like myself!”Β

Bruce Davidson.

Photographer Bruce Davidson was shooting scenes of urban poverty on East 100th Street in New York, when a woman asked him why he was there. When he said he was shooting images of the ghetto, she responded, β€œWhat you call a ghetto, I call my home.”

Davidson, a member of the Magnum Photos collective, worked hard to balance the dire situations that residents lived in with moments of beauty and resilience. It was alsoΒ a common thread throughout his life’s work. No matter the situation, Davidson’s subjects maintained their inalienable right, as humans, to dignity. This is apparent in Davidson’s book, β€œBruce Davidson” (Prestel, May 2016), a collection ofΒ his most important work including the civil rights era, the subway, aΒ circus and a Brooklyn gang.

While DavidsonΒ could take a photo in an instant, reform came slowly. β€œ[My work] doesn’t change anything overnight,” he said via email, β€œNo matter how long I photographed on East 100th St.,Β it wasn’t going to change that fast.”

And I wonder, where are they now? What happened to their lives?

Could be…

Perhaps there will be a calender for the year of 2017. My friend Peter SchΓ€ublin, of Schaffhaussen, Switzerland and I have produced one every year since 1998. Missing only two years. Peter is an exceptional graphic designer, and a photographer himself. These are the first outlines.

Images from my “Used gloves collection”.

What do you think?

Once upon a time

Take a look at these wunderful images in the article. Read the texts and you understand that this is no ordinary b/w prints that are tinted. Amazing work! I read this in The Guardian.

Text for the above image.

Remember that photographers had to use b/w or color film years ago. Or just b/w if it was many years ago. Today it is easier with everything built into a camera.

Finally: Now I have seen the question, again. Is photography art? In my opinion YES it could be, but not every photograph is. Far from!

It is final

It came and it went. Like all other days. The final day at TΓ€by Galopp in Stockholm. Sun, clouds and artificial lights gave different looks to the races, and the images. Together with two colleagues I produced an exhibition for the event. It was well received and I am very happy for that. It gave me a possibility to talk to the viewers. Some did not see the point in unfocused, blurred images at all. So I told them that I do. To me it is not that important to recognize jockeys, horses or owners. I am looking for speed, power and color. So also yesterday. Here is the result. A few more images to add to the series from TΓ€by. Next race is another track, different light and angles. Exciting and a new challenge.

I accept that challenge!

Come rain, come shine

I am in the need of a sauna just coming back from a cold day at the race track! So how do the jockeys feel when they are coming in from a long day on the horse back? Many horse backs that is, since they ride so many different horses during a race day. The weather was testing us, how much we could stand.

Not many races left at the old track now. The 18th next month is the final day. As always there is a new page to be turned and to experience. That will be interesting. Here is the selection of images frpm today. Enjoy! πŸ˜€

By the way, are there saunas for horses!

Sad and/but beautiful

After just returning home from 10 days in Kenya, these images are very sad to see. But they are also very beautiful. But of course it would be more beautiful if the animals could be seen in these places live. See and read more on BBC.

Nick Brandt built lifesized panels depicting Africa’s great creatures and placed them in scenes where they used to roam. The resulting photographs serve as a potent reminder of what poaching and climate change put at stake. Β© Nick Brandt.

Long time, no horse race

ItΒ΄s been some time since I visited a horse race. However, yesterday I went back to TΓ€by Galopp. The track is old and it will soon be closed down and replaced by a new one. At Bro. A place also just outside Stockholm, but in another direction from TΓ€by. It will be interesting to see how the races will develop there. TΓ€by is like Venedig. Beautiful in its decline. Lots of patina that attract us photographers.

A rest for eyes and mind was healthy. Time to refocus and find new details and ways to capture my images. But of course I recognize all the events. I get good exercise since I am not always standing at the goal waiting for a winner. That is what many of my friends and colleagues have to do. It is their job to catch the winner. And after that the winning horse, jockey and owner.Β  Instead I can concentrate on investigating other parts of the race with all preparations and other post race activities.

Here is a selection from yesterday, enjoy! 😊  Pelle

And the winner is, this year…

World Press Photo 2016 Photo Contest.

Photography is a very strong media. Some images will make you happy and others will make you very sad. What ever you do, donΒ΄t miss it!!!

All images will affect your emotions. And it is worth it.
